Melissa Jeanette Franklin, widely known as Missy Franklin, is a swimmer and athlete born on May 10, 1995, in Pasadena, California, USA. She learned to swim under the guidance of coach Todd Schmitz at the Colorado Stars. Missy began her national and international career with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials at 13.
Her performance at the 2010 National Championships qualified her to participate in the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, where she placed fourth in the 100m backstroke. Missy placed second in the 200m backstroke at the 2010 Short Course World Championships in Dubai. She won the Golden Goggle award for Breakout Performer of the Year for the event.
At the 2012 London Olympics, Missy won five medals, including four golds and one bronze, earning her the nickname Missy The Missile. She won Swimmer of the Year Awards from FINA and Swimming World for her remarkable 2012 season. The following year, she won six gold medals in seven events at the World Championships. She is the youngest ever Laureus Academy Member.
