Miyavi is the stage name for musician and actor Takamasa Ishihara, known for his percussive guitar-playing style. He got his start in music in 1999 playing guitar for the band Dué le Quartz before switching to a solo career. Miyavi originally wanted to pursue a career in sports, before an injury derailed his first choice of career. He is fond of the “visual kei” style of Japanese musicians, operating with costumes and make-up to build up an image.
As a musician, Miyavi has released ten studio albums between 2002 and 2016. He also won the MTV Video Music Japan Award for “Best Collaboration” in 2013. He has toured the US and EU, and shared a stage with the artists 30 Seconds To Mars and Lenny Kravitz. As an actor, he got his break playing a role in the 2014 Angelina Jolie produced film “Unbroken.” Since then he has appeared in the 2017 film “Kong: Skull Island” and the 2018 film “Bleach,” based on the manga of the same name.
