Myrkur is the umbrella project for danish musician Amalie Bruun, a black metal performer. The one-woman project is an independent effort signed to Relapse Records in 2014, after releasing a self-titled EP. She not only did her own vocals and wrote her own music for it, but she played all the instruments, making her the Danish equivalent of Nine Inch Nails. the name “Myrkur” means “darkness” in Icelandic.
Since breaking into the scene, Myrkur’s brand of symphonic, progressive black metal has gotten a little help, from Norwegian collective Ulver frontman Kristoffer Rygg producing, and members of the bands Mayhem, Nidingr, and Dodheimsgard on instrumentals. Bruun tells that her vocal style, blending choral singing with black metal screaming, is about a theme of inner and outer demons and emotional and physical assaults.
