Nichelle Nichols is an American actress singer, and trailblazer known for her groundbreaking role as Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek television series. She was born in Robbins, Illinois, United States, on December 28, 1932.
Nichols began her career as a singer, performing with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton before transitioning to acting. Her portrayal of Lieutenant Uhura, a character who broke barriers as one of the first African-American women in a non-stereotypical role on American television, made Nichols an icon of diversity and representation. she appeared in several Star Trek films, including "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country".
