Originating in 1989 in South Carolina, the band Nickel Creek initially started out as The Nickel Creek Band, and have since shortened their name. The progressive acoustic group is comprised of Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Sean Watkins, whose music worlds intertwined through instrument lessons and mutual friends. They made their debut performance in Carlsbad, California, at That Pizza Place in 1989, and from then on continued to perform together. The band members were very young at the time, and even had Chris Thile’s father at the inception of the band playing string bass. Nickel Creek debuted their first album in 1993, entitled Little Cowpoke, and later, Here to There, their sophomore album which was released in 1997.
After a chance meeting with singer Alison Krauss, Nickel Creek had their album produced by her, and later would go on to receive Grammy Award nominations for Best Bluegrass Album and Best Country Instrumentals for their track “Ode to a Butterfly”. The Krauss-produced 2002 album This Side shot to #2 on the Top Country Albums chart, and also earned the group an award at the Grammys for Best Contemporary Folk Album. They would go on to release Why Should the Fire Die in 2005 and A Dotted Line in 2014.
