Niia Bertino was born on July 11, 1988 in Needham, Massachusetts. She moved to New York, which is where she met the popular musician Wyclef Jean. They released a top single in 2007 together titled Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill), which hit the Hot 100 list. This song also featured Lil’ Wayne, who is a prominent star in the rap world.
Niia has made several television appearances, such as the late night comedy shows with David Letterman and Craig Ferguson, as well as VH1’s Soul Stage and the BET Awards. She released her 2013 album Made for You, which was well-received in the music community. She also hosted a TED talk in 2013 that was geared towards recognizing inner beauty. Her accolades include being chosen as one of the top 100 singers in the country by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts and she also won in the jazz category of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts’ search for talent competition.
