Nitin Sawhney Bio

Nitin Sawhney is a British musician, composer, DJ, multi-instrumentalist and producer, besides having a parallel career as a comic actor. He was born in 1964, in London, although he was raised in Rochester, in a Punjabi family. His musical journey began as a child, and he studied classical piano, sitar, table and flamenco guitar through his childhood and teenage years. During his college years, he toured as a part of The James Taylor Quartet, led by his friend and acid jazz player, James Taylor. After that experience, he decided to set up his own jazz band, The Jazztones. He also paired with Talvin Singh to form the Tihai Trio. In 1993, he released his debut solo album “Spirit Dance” through his own label. He has composed music for more than 20 movies including “Mowgli” besides composing music for video games and orchestra. With his university friend, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Nitin Sawhney created the comedy show The Secret Asians which later got its own BBC radio show. Throughout his career, Nitin Sawhney has collaborated and toured with many famous artists such as Paul McCartney, Sting, Brian Eno, Shakira, Jacob Golden, Nelson Mandela, and many others. He is considered a world-class composer and producer and in 2017, he won the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement, a prestigious award.
