Omara Portuondo Bio

Omara Portuondo is a Cuban singer and dancer who was born on October 29 1930 in Havana, Cuba. In 1952 Omara formed Cuarteto d'Aida with her sister Haydee and Elena Burke. 

Omara began dancing for the Tropicana nightclub. She then sang with Loquibambia, Los Cuartetos de Facundo Rivero, Orlando de la Rosa, and Orquesta Anacaona till the late 1940s. She and her sister Haydee formed another group, Las d’Aida, and performed from 1952 till 1967 before she went solo. In the 1970s, Omara represented Cuba in the 1970s Sopot Festival in Poland, the Fête d'Humanité in Paris and toured with Orquesta Aragaon. She went on another tour with Buena Vista Social Club in 1997 and on a documentary in 1999 with them. The release of her 19990s Buena Vista Social Club album increased her reach to the worldwide audience. Her first worldwide solo tour ran from 2000 to 2002. She won the Echo Music Awards for the Best International Jazz Act in 2000.
