Singer OMI was born Omar Samuel Pasley on September 3, 1986 in Clarendon, Jamaica. He was discovered by Clifton “Specialist” Dillon in Kingston, Jamaica, and he signed with Jamaican indie label, Oufah Records. His first single, “Standing on All Threes,” was released in 2011. He followed it up with the song, “Cheerleader,” which was a small success in Jamaica. He came out with three more singles in Jamaica, but none did as well as “Cheerleader”. In 2014, Ultra Music president Patrick Moxley heard “Cheerleader” and commissioned it to be remixed and released in the United States as a dance single. There were two remixed versions completed, and Ultra went with the one done by German producer Felix Jaehn.
Released in 2014, “Cheerleader” had huge success in Sweden initially and eventually spread throughout much of Europe as a smash hit single. It reached number one in Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. “Cheerleader” also reached number one on the singles charts in Australia and Canada. It debuted on the Hot 100 in the United States in May 2015, and after twelve weeks reached number one.
