Opeth is the legendary progressive metal band from Stockholm, Sweden, with a decade spanning four decades and the band that practically launched a million imitators in Scandinavia. Their current line-up is Mikael Åkerfeldt (lead vocals, guitars), Fredrik Åkesson (guitar, backing vocals), Joakim Svalberg (keyboards, synthesizers, piano, mellotron, backing vocals), Martín Méndez (bass), and Martin “Axe” Axenrot (drums, percussion). They’re known for an unusually uplifting sound, symphonic and almost folksy.
Opeth as of this writing is up to twelve studio albums, with rock-solid chart performance worldwide, especially since 2003. There’s practically no metal-favoring venue they haven’t played, and they are one of the few Scandinavian metal bands to be mentioned as peers to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Iron Maiden, plus the only one to also be considered the peers of King Crimson, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Cannibal Corpse, and Morbid Angel.
