Orchestra Baobab began as a house band in 1970. They played on weekends at a nightclub that opened that same year in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. They soon became the hottest band in Dakar, catering to government officials and other dignitaries. Orchèstre Baobab played a wide variety of styles ranging from R&B, rock, tango, and paso doble to Afro-Cuban, Wolof griot (Senegalese storytelling), Congolese, and Ghanaian music.
Orchestra Baobab was the most popular African band group from the 1970s and early 1980s. They gained worldwide recognition when they played in the Parisian wedding of fashion designer Pierre Cardin's daughter, the Miss Senegal pageant, and the inauguration of the then Senegalese president Abdou Diouf in 1981. The band's popularity quickly spread from Senegal throughout West Africa and crossed over to European audiences. They were charging more than $4,500 (in 1981) for a live performance.
Their most famous works are N'Wolof Dakar Sound (1970), Mouhamadou Bamba Productions Jambaar (1981), Sibou Odia Productions Jambaa (1981), Pirate's Choice World Circuit (1982), On Vera Ça World Circuit (1992), Bamba Stern's (1994), and Specialist in All Styles World Circuit (2002).
