Oscar D’León was born on July 11th, 1943, in Caracas, Venezuela. His birth names are Oscar Emilio León Samoza, but he has been called the Lion of Salsa or El León de la Salsa. He is a contemporary Salsa musician mostly prominent during the 1940s-1950s as a singer and bass player.
From 1972-1976, D’León was part of a Venezuelan salsa band known as Dimension Latina. The group released 6 albums including 780 Kilos de Salsa, El Frutero, and Dimension Latina. D’León decided to leave the group in 1976 and started his own band named La Salsa Mayor featuring trumpet player Cesar Pinto, and famous pianist Enrique Culebra Iriarte. The group released a few songs before they split up in 1978.
In 1974, D’León was honored to sing on La Critica’s album of the year titled Se Necesita Rumbero. He was also part of the RMM label and released a Grammy-nominated album in 1996, titled El Sonero Del Mundo.
