Paul van Dyk (born Mathias Paul, 16 December. 1973) is a German electronic dance music DJ and producer. He is recognized as one of the world’s first superstar DJs, one of the first DJs of his kind to earn international recognition, as well as the first DJ to win a Grammy award.
Paul Van Dyk grew up in East Berlin listening extensively to (then illegal) Western radio stations from behind the Berlin wall. This, he claimed, was his musical education, as he had no access to record stores or music classes. He eventually assembled a basic turntable set, and after the wall fell he began DJing at the Tresor, one of Berlin’s most famous nightclubs. This allowed him to collaborate with other DJs and to present his own material to a wider audience.
His first album, 45 RPM, was released in 1994 and propelled him to further prominence, but his breakout came with his second album, Seven Ways, which featured the singles Forbidden Fruit and Beautiful Palace, which topped the British and German dance charts. He released two albums in 1998, a remix album (Perspective) and a mix album (Vorsprung Dyk Technik) before releasing Out There and Back, featuring the single Tell Me Why, and following a global tour he released another EP, Columbia in 2001. Paul Van Dyk released his 6th studio album, Evolution in 2012 after a 5 years of constant mixing and and production work, and touring.
