Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, and began his musical career at the age of 11. Pedrito Martinez is the leader of The Pedrito Martinez Group. The band specializes in a fusion of Latin and Jazz music. The group consists of Edgar Pantoja-Alema, Alvaro Benavides, and Jhair Sala. The Pedrito Martinez Group was formed in New York City, New York in 2012. Edgar plays the piano, trumpet, and arranges and composes the group’s music, while Alvaro and Jhair play percussion and bass respectively. The group released their self-titled album, The Pedrito Martinez Group, in 2013 under the label Motema. The album featured guest appearances from Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield, Marc Quinones, and Gary Schreiner. After the stabilization of US-Cuban relations in 2014, the group headed to Havana to record their second album. The album Havana Dreams was released in 2016. The album charted in on the Digital Latin Tropical and Jazz charts at number 1 and featured guest appearances from artists such as Isaac Delgado, Descemer Bueno, Telmary Diaz, Roman Diaz, Angelique Kidjo, Ruben Blades, and Marsalis.
