Pennywise is a pop-punk band that is part of the punk revival movement which came to the fore in the 1980s on the west coast. They take their name from the monster clown character in Stephen King’s novel “It.” Their current line-up is Jim Lindberg (lead vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Randy Bradbury (bass), and Byron McMackin (drums). The original quartet (with Jason Thirsk as bassist) all went to high school together in Hermosa Beach, and formed the band straight out of school with their first record contract two years later.
Pennywise has released twelve studio albums to date on the Epitaph Records label, plus fourteen singles which have Alternative chart placement occasionally, very usual for a punk band. They blend influences from surf rock and hardcore with uncharacteristic positive lyrics, resulting in a radio-friendly sound. Pennywise has toured with staple punk bands including Bad Religion, The Offspring, The Vandals, Stiff Little Fingers and Naked Raygun. They have also had Zoli Téglás, of the band Ignite, fill in for vocals.
