Performing under the name Pretty Lights, electronic music artist Derek Vincent Smith was born on November 25, 1981, in Colorado. He put his education plans on hold to pursue a career in music, and in 2009, was able to play at some of the more popular festivals such as Electric Daisy Festival, Bonnaroo, and Camp Bisco. Though he released an album in 2006 titled Taking UP Your Precious Time, he did not begin to garner attention until the subsequent albums, namely Filling Up the City Skies in 2008 and Passing by Behind Your Eyes in 2009. The next year, he performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and further gained attention for his appearances at other EDM festivals. Pretty Lights eventually formed the label Pretty Lights Music, through which he released two albums just after his Fall tour. Pretty Lights put out the albums A Color Map of the Sun in 2013, which he followed with a remix of the album that year. The original 2013 production was nominated at the 2014 Grammy Awards for Best Dance/Electronica Album.
