Prince Bio

Iconic singer and international star Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7, 1958. His family was extremely musically inclined, as his father was an instrumentalist and his mother was a singer. While he was involved in several bands and music projects as a young teenager, he was eventually discovered and signed to Warner Bros. Records, through whom he released his debut album For You in 1978. The next year, he self-released the album Prince, featuring the hit singles “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover”. In 1980, Prince would go on tour as the opening act for Rick James, later appearing on Saturday Night Live just a few years before releasing one of his most popular albums yet, titled Purple Rain in 1984, which featured the super hits “When Doves Cry” and the title track. The album sold over 13 million copies in the United States and also inspired a movie that did extremely well in the country, winning an Academy Award after is premier.

Overall in his career, Prince has released two dozen studio albums, has been nominated 33 times at the Grammy Awards, and has won 13 of those awards, including Best R&B Song for “I Feel For You” in 1985, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Call My Name” in 2005, and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for “Musicology” in 2005. The albums 1999 and Purple Rain have also been honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
