Priti Patel Bio

Priti Patel (born March 29, 1972 in North London, England) is a British Politician who served as the Secretary of State for the Home Department from July 24, 2019 to September 6, 2022.

Patel worked in communications for over ten years including a stint at the firm Weber Shandwick. From 1995 to 1997, she headed the press office of the Referendum Party. In November 2006, she became the Conservative candidate for the safe Conservative seat of Witham in central Essex. In 2012, Patel released her book, ‘Britain Unchained’, co-written with four other Conservative MPs: Dominic Raab, Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng – all members of the Cabinet at that time.

In November 2013, the Prime Minister appointed Patel as the first ever UK Indian Diaspora Champion. In 2014, she was promoted as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury. From this position, she became a leading figure in the campaign to leave the EU at the 2016 referendum.

Following the referendum, the new PM, Theresa May, appointed Patel Secretary of State for International Development. However, Patel’s tenure ended abruptly in 2017 after resigning following unauthorized meetings with the Government of Israel which breached the Ministerial Code. Patel resigned from the government at the point that Liz Truss became prime minister in September 2022.
