Acoustic bluegrass band the Punch Brothers consists of Gabe Witcher (fiddle/violin), Paul Kowert (bass), Chris Eldridge (guitar), Chris Thile (mandolin), and Noam Pikelny (banjo). They formed in 2006 in Brooklyn, New York.
They first called themselves The How to Grow a Band, then changed to The Tensions Mountain Boys, and eventually stayed with the Punch Brothers. They debuted “The Blind Leaving the Blind,” a forty minute suite in four movements, at Carnegie Hall in March 2007. In February 2008, they released their debut studio album, “Punch,” on Nonesuch Records. It reached number one on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart. Their second album, “Antifogmatic,” was released in June 2010, and reached number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, and number two on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart and the Billboard Folk Albums chart. The Punch Brothers were featured in the documentary entitled “How to Grow a Band,” which premiered at the Nashville Film Festival in April 2011. In February 2012, their third album, “Who’s Feeling Young Now?,” was released. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Folk Albums chart and number one on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart. The album, “The Phosphorescent Blues,” was released in January 2015 and peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Top 200, number thirteen on the Billboard Digital Albums chart, number nine on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, number four on the Billboard Folk Albums chart, and number one on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart.
