Born on May 5, 1975, in Newark, New Jersey, Raheem DeVaughn is the son of Abdul Wadud, a popular jazz musician known for his skill on the cello. When Raheem DeVaughn was very young, he and his family moved to Maryland, which allowed him close proximity to Washington, D.C., where he became a known performer in the clubs. After winning a music-related talent contest, Raheem DeVaughn was discovered by and signed to Jive Records, through which he released his first studio album The Love Experience in 2005. His sophomore album, Love Behind the Melody, brought him the success he craved, however, with the release of the single “Woman”. The single got him nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and was at the top of the iTunes chart the week it was released. The album sold hundreds of thousands of copies in the United States alone, and Raheem DeVaughn began hearing himself compared to singers such as D’Angelo and Donny Hathaway.
In March 2010, Raheem DeVaughn released The Love & War MasterPeace, which reached #9 on the Billboard 200, and got him nominated once again at the Grammy Awards, this time for Best R&B Album. Seeming to not take a break from the studio, Raheem DeVaughn released his fourth studio album, A Place Called Love Land, in September of 2013.
