Rai Benjamin (born July 27 1997 in Mount Vernon, New York, USA) is a famous American hurdler and sprinter most renowned for representing the USA in 400m sprints and hurdles. He is the son of Winston Benjamin, a former Antiguan cricketer who played 21 Tests and 85 One Day Internationals for West Indies. Benjamin attended Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, New York where he was a three-time state champion in the 400m hurdles.
In 2016, Benjamin placed sixth at the NCAA Championships with a then personal record of 49.82 to earn All-America honors. In 2017, he finished in second and earned All-America honors in the 400m hurdles with a personal record of 48.33 at the NCAA Championships. Earlier in the 2019 World Championships, Benjamin won a silver medal in men’s 400m hurdles and gold medal in 4x400m.
In 2021, Benjamin won the silver medal in the 400 meters hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics with a time of 46.17 seconds, hence, becoming the second fastest sprinter in the 400 meters hurdles in history.
