Coming from Champaign, Illinois, REO Speedwagon was formed in 1968. In the early ‘80s, REO Speedwagon is among the rock kings together with Styx and Journey. The band started off as a pair of students in University of Illinois. Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer signed with Irving Azoff after graduating. Then they welcomed Gary Richrath, Gregg Philbin, and Terry Luttrell.
They released their self-titled debut in 1971 under Epic Records. The debut wasn’t enough to bring them to mainstream music. Luttrell left and was replaced by Kevin Cronin. They rolled the 1972’s “R.E.O.T.W.O.” but also failed. Cronin left and was replaced by Mike Murphy. After they released 1974’s “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” it was able to hit the Billboard charts, which soon followed all their major breaks.
