Born on February 21, 1977, in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States, Rhiannon Giddens is an American musician specializing in folk, country, and old-time music. She is also the founding member of the Grammy Award-winning old-time string band The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Giddens is widely-known for her soulful music that not only embodies traditional feel but also resonates with the modern times. She carried a passion for music right from her childhood and studied opera at the Oberlin Conservatory. In 2005, she formed the string band Sankofa Strings now known as The Carolina Chocolate Drops. The band expertly created a well-respected concoction of blues, jazz, Caribbean, and country music in the four albums they released from 2006 to 2009. In 2010, they released widely-acclaimed album Genuine Negro Jig with Nonesuch Records. From 2013 onwards, Giddens also started focusing on her solo career and wowed the crowd with her phenomenal performances. In 2015, she released her solo album Tomorrow Is My Turn followed by an EP called Factory Girl. Her other notable albums include Freedom Highway and There Is No Other.
