Richard Thompson Bio

Richard Thompson was born as Richard John Thompson on April 3, 1949, in West London’s Ladbroke Crescent in Notting Hill Gate. He was one of the founders of the group Fairport Convention. The group’s debut album was released in 1968. After leaving the band, he continued to pursue music, this time with his wife Linda. This led to the release of their album I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight in 1974. His breakthrough happened with the release of Shoot Out the Lights in 1982 which was released under Hannibal Records. The following year saw the release of Hand of Kindness under the same label and the song “Tear Stained Letter” became a country hit in the US. Thompson released more music in the following years. In 2019, he was also in charge of the music for the motion picture The Cold Blue.
