Ricky Ponting, whose birth name is Ricky Thomas Ponting, is an Australian former cricket player and cricket coach who was born on December 19, 1974, in Launceston, Tasmania. He was first introduced to cricket by his father and his uncle. By the age of 11, he was playing for the under-13 Mowbray’s team. In 1992, he debuted in first-class cricket for Tasmania, and became the youngest person to ever play in a Sheffield Shield match. In 1995, he made his Australian ODI debut in New Zealand in a match against South Africa, which started his international career. In 1996, he played in the World Cup. In 2003, he was selected as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World, and in 2006, he was selected one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the year.
