Rigoberto Urán (born January 26, 1987 in Urrao, Colombia) is a professional cyclist, best known for winning the silver medal in road racing at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He was the first Colombian ever to make the podium of the Giro d'Italia.
At the age of 14, Urán uncovered his cycling prowess by clinching victory in his inaugural race, a time trial. Introduced to the sport by his father and mentor, Urán faced the responsibility of supporting his family after his father's passing. Until the age of 16, he worked as a lottery ticket seller. Subsequently, he embarked on a journey to Medellin, Colombia's second-largest city, to pursue a career as a professional cyclist with the Orgullo Paisa team.
Assuming leadership of Team Sky during the 2013 Giro d'Italia, Urán stepped into the void left by the departure of team captain Bradley Wiggins. His ascent to the top spot in the Giro d'Italia occurred on May 22, 2014, following his victory in the 12th stage. In 2016, Rigoberto made a transition to the Cannondale pro cycling team.
