Ron DeSantis (born in Jacksonville, Florida), is the Governor of Florida and former U.S. Representative for Florida’s Sixth District. He grew up in Orlando and Dunedin, Florida. He assumed office on January 8, 2019 and his term ends on January 5, 2027.
A native Floridian with blue-collar roots, DeSantis (Republican Party) worked his way through Yale University, where he graduated with honors and was the captain of the varsity baseball team. He also graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, he earned a commission in the U.S. Navy as a judge advocate general (JAG) officer. DeSantis also served in the U.S. Navy from 2004 to 2010. After active-duty service, he served as a federal prosecutor. His military honors include the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
DeSantis was first elected in 2012 to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Florida's 6th Congressional District, a position he held until running for governor in 2018. In 2015, he announced he would run for the Senate seat held by Marco Rubio. When Rubio announced he would seek re-election to the Senate, DeSantis ran for re-election in the House instead. DeSantis is running for election for President of the United States. He announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential primary on May 24, 2023.
