Roots Manuva Bio

Roots Manuva was born Rodney Hylton Smith on September 9th, 1972 in Stockwell, London. Debuting as a rapper and producer in the late 90’s, Roots Manuva’s sound is strongly influenced by his Jamaican, British, and Pentecostal upbringing. His musical styles are rooted in dub, ragga, trip-hop, along with a strong electronic and rich bass sound.

Roots Manuva began recording in 1994, first appearing on Blak Twang’s single “Queen’s Head.” He first saw chart success after the release of his debut album Brand New Second Hand with the single “Dusted” peaking on the UK Top 40 chart at number 28. On his second album, Run Come Save Me, the single “Witness (1 Hope)” peaked at number 45 and became a well-known UK rap anthem with its mimicry of the Doctor Who theme.

The release of his first two albums brought Roots Manuva international recognition. His debut album won the coveted British MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act of the Year. The British newspaper, The Times, named him the “voice of urban Britian.” Roots Manuva has become a frequent guest collaborator with artists such as DJ Shadow, DJ Skitz, and many more. He also made a guest appearance on the Gorillaz second studio album, Demon Days, on the track “All Alone.”
