Rosie Perez Bio

Rosie Perez is an American actress born in Brooklyn, New York City on September 6, 1964. She is the daughter of Lydia Perez and Ismael Serrano, a merchant marine, both from Puerto Rico. She stayed in a foster house from three to five years old, until she moved with her aunt. At the same time, she joined the Grover Cleveland High School, in the Queen’s area called Ridgewood, and after, moved to Los Angeles City College. During her college time, she was about to move back to NYC when she met Spike Lee, who asked her to act in the movie “Do The Right Thing”. By 1997, she debuted as a producer with the documentary “SUBWAYStories: Tales from the Underground”, and in 1999, her second film, “The 24 Hour Woman”. She has also performed as an actress with personalities like Drew Barrymore. On TV she appeared in the TV movie “Lakawanna Blues”, in 2005. She has also performed in theaters, making her debut on Broadway, in the play “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune”. After she directed her first documentary, “Yo Soy Boricua, pa’que tu lo sepas!”, she appeared in the film “The Take”, which earned her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award.
