Run DMC was a popular American hip hop group founded in 1983 by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell. The trio is considered one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop. In 1983 they released their ground-breaking single, It’s Like That/Sucker MCs on Profile Records. They were the first hip-hop group to have a gold album Run-D.M.C. in 1984 and the first rap act to appear on MTV. They released their second album King of Rock in 1985. The same year, the group appeared in the rap movie Krush Groove, which also featured Kurtis Blow, the Beastie Boys, and the Fat Boys. Their third album Raising Hell, released in 1986, became the first rap album to go platinum. The group released several other albums before Jam Master Jay's murder in 2002. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2016.
