Ryan Murphy Bio

Ryan Murphy is an American screenwriter, director, and producer born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 9, 1965. He is best known for creating/co-creating/producing the television shows Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud, and 9-1-1. He is also known for directing the films The Normal Heart and Eat, Pray, Love. After graduating from college he worked as a journalist for The Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, Miami Herald, Entertainment Weekly, and Knoxville News Sentinel. He started writing movie scripts and in the 1990s Steven Spielberg purchased his script Why Can’t I Be Audrey Hepburn?. In 1999 he started working in television after co-creating the show Popular with Gina Matthews. Murphy has been a creator/co-creator, writer, producer and/or director on the shows and films Glee, Nip/Tuck, Scream Queens, Feud, The Politician, Hollywood, Popular, American Horror Story, Pose, Ratched, Eat Pray Love, Running With Scissors, Open, and more. in 2018 he was hired as a Netflix executive. Throughout his career he has been nominated for a 28 Primetime Emmy Awards and has won 6.
