Rygin King was born Matthew Smith and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He had a passion for music, and when he first started writing songs as a youngster, Buju Banton served as his main influence. By the time King was in his early 20s, he had a management team in place and had his sights set on a career in music. He published several songs in 2017 that were popular in dancehall, such as the mellow rhythm of "Feel Like This (Big Toe)" and the more energetic "Pretty Little Freak." Instead of concentrating on an album, King continued to gradually release singles throughout 2018, getting more recognition for songs like "Tuff" and "Powerful" that are well-known globally. He continued to follow this trend in 2019 with the release of new songs "Star Life" and "Clean" and frequent live performances in support of his tracks with performances in Jamaica and the United States.
