S. Epatha Merkerson is an award-winning American actress, producer, and director best known for her work in the long-running series Law & Order and Chicago Med. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan, United States, on November 28, 1952. Merkerson began her acting career in 1986 when she appeared in the TV series Pee-wee's Playhouse and the film She's Gotta Have It. She has since been a regular on the TV series Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., Deception, Here and Now, and Mann & Machine, but she is best known for starring in the crime-drama series Law & Order alongside Jerry Orbach, Jesse L. Martin, Sam Waterston, and Benjamin Bratt. Merkerson’s filmography includes Lincoln, Radio, Black Snake Moan, and Peeples. She has won multiple awards throughout her career, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie, a Golden Globes Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries.
