Samuel L Jackson was born on December 21, 1948 in Washington, D.C. He majored in marine biology before deciding to become an actor. He acted in several plays in college before getting his break in the 1972 film Together for Days. After moving from Atlanta, GA to New York in 1976, he appeared in a variety of stage plays. He played minor roles in Coming to America (1988) and Goodfellas (1990).
His 1991 role in Jungle Fever was so acclaimed that a “Supporting Actor” category was created just for him. From there, Jackson went on to work in comedy (National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1) and drama (Juice and Patriot Games) before appearing in Jurassic Park (1993). In 1994, Jackson took on his arguably most famous role as Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. The role was written specifically for Jackson, and he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a Golden Globe nomination and won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Role.
After Pulp Fiction, Jackson joined Die Hard with a Vengeance and A Time to Kill. In 2000, he gained a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He starred as Mace Windu in Star Wars: Episode III in 2005. In 2006, he became an internet legend for his role in Snakes on a Plane. His more recent work includes the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Universe movies, a live-action adaptation of Afro Samurai and voice work for audiobooks and video games.
