He was born in Stockton, California, on 21st March 1982. He graduated from Richland High School in Richland, Washington, in the year 2000. He received his BFA in Actor Training from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater in 2004.
Fontana co-wrote the musical satire Perfect Harmony and starred in The Fantasticks' Off-Broadway revival. He also starred as Hamlet in The Guthrie Theater's production of Shakespeare's play Hamlet in 2016. Fontana was also a member of the Essentials theatre troupe.
Fontana won a Drama Desk Award for his role in Brighton Beach Memoirs. He made his Broadway debut on Sunday in the Park with George. From 1st October 2008 to 4th July 2009, Fontana served as Tony in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot.
He voiced Prince Hans in the Walt Disney Animation Studios film shot in 2013. Then, in 2015, Fontana turned into the primary visitor craftsman to perform multiple times for about one year with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
He also joined the cast of the CW musical parody dramatization Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that same year. In addition, he stars in the stage melodic adjustment of the film Tootsie, which debuted in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theater.
