Sara Elena Ramirez was born on August 31, 1975 in Mazatlan, Mexico. She enrolled at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and then continued on to the prestigious Julliard School. In her early career, Ramirez spent sometime on Broadway, acting in such shows as Into the Woods, Hello Dolly!, and Annie. She won a Tony Award for her work in Spamalot; however, she is best known for her role as Calle Torres on Grey’s Anatomy alongside Ellen Pompeo. Most recently, after playing her role on Grey’s Anatomy for over a decade, Ramirez left the show. She has continued working on the animated series Sofia the First voicing Queen Miranda. Other awards include nominations and a win at the Screen Actor Guild Awards. She also sings and released an EP in 2011.
