Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a Millennial cellist and winner of the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year award at age seventeen. He grew up in a musical family, out of seven children who all expressed musical talent from a young age. By age nine, he had been awarded a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music, London, there winning the Marguerite Swan Memorial Prize.
In 2015, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and two siblings (sister Isata, piano, and brother Braimah, violin) appeared on the TV show “Britain’s Got Talent” as the Kanneh-Mason Trio, an experience Sheku accounts bolstered his showmanship. Today he works as a member of Europe’s Chineke Orchestra. He has been signed to Decca Records, and his album “Inspiration” (2018) was the largest-selling debut album of the year at the point.
