Shovels & Rope Bio
Shovels & Rope is a folk duo based out of Charleston, SC and currently signed to Dualtone Records.Members Cary Anne Hearst, of Mississippi, and Michael Trent, of Colorado, both had music careers before meeting in Charleston in 2002. Their first album, Shovels & Rope was released in 2008, after which both Trent and Hearst continued to work on their solo careers; Hearst released an EP and a full-length record in 2010 and 2011, respectively, and Trent released one full-length album in 2010. In 2012, Trent and Hearst both committed to Shovels & Rope and released O’ Be Joyful, their second full-length album as a duo. O’ Be Joyful reached number 123 on the Billboard 200 and number 7 on the US Folk charts. Their 2013 single “Birmingham” earned the Song of the Year award at the Americana Music Honors and Awards; the band also won Emerging Artist of the Year in that year. 2014’s Swimmin’ Time debuted at number 21 on the Billboard 200 and reached number 5 on the US Folk charts.
