Phillip, Simon Hugh Callow CBE, is an English actor, director, and writer who was born on June 15, 1949.
Callow's involvement in the theatre began when he wrote a fan letter to Sir Laurence Olivier, the artistic director of the National Theatre, and received a response inviting him to join their box-office staff. He realized he wanted to perform after watching actors rehearse.
Callow made his stage debut in The Three Estates at Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms Theatre in 1973. He joined the Gay Sweatshop theatrical company in the early 1970s and appeared in Martin Sherman's critically acclaimed Passing By. In 1977, he appeared in Epsom Downs in several roles, and in 1979, he appeared in Snoo Wilson's The Soul of the White Ant at the Soho Poly.
