Skating Polly was originally formed in Oklahoma City in 2009 by two teenagers Mayo and Bighorse, who were nine and 14 respectively. They played for the first time at their family’s Halloween party, with Bighorse playing drums and Mayo playing the two-stringed basitar. They started to write songs inspired by the ‘70s punk and early- ‘90s alt-rock songs. Being influenced by musical groups such as Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland, they recorded their first album “Taking Over the World” with Oklahoma-based indie Nice People Records. Skating Polly got their second album “Lost Wonderfuls' ' produced by Exene Cervenka in 2011. The album was so successful that they went on tours for prominent indie acts like Deerhoof, Band of Horses, and The Flaming Lips. They worked with K Records guru for their third album titled “Fuzz Steilacoom '' and it was released in March 2014. In 2016, came the fourth album “The Big Fit ''. Skating Polly collaborated with Nina Gordon and Louise Post from Veruca Salt on three-song EP “New Trick” released in 2017.
In 2018, they collaborated with the producer Brad Wood for their record “The Make It All Show”, and by this point, their brother Kurtis Mayo joined them in the group as drummer.
