Sounwave is the stage name of the American record producer Mark Spears. He was born in Compton, California on February 28, 1986. At 10 years old, he started using a Korg drum machine to make beats. He started using a 4-track machine and the MTV Music Generator for PlayStation. He became part of the hip hop production team Digi+Phonics. Digi+Phonics serves as the in-house producers for the record label Top Dawg Entertainment. Some of Spear’s earliest work for Top Dawg was on Kendrick Lamar’s self-titled EP. He went on to produce most of Kendrick Lamar’s mixtape Section.80 and three songs on his album Good Kid., M.A.A.D City. He has also produced music for the artists Isaiah Rashad, ScHoolboy Q, Flo Rida, Jay Rock and others.
