Stephen Merchant is an English writer, director, radio presenter, actor, and comedian born in Hanham, Bristol, England on November 24, 1974. He is best known for co-writing and co-directing the sitcom The Office. He started his broadcasting career in college on the student radio station Radio Warwick. He started performing stand-up comedy at Bristol Comedy Box. In 1997 he made his first appearance on television in the show Blockbusters and went on to have roles and appear in the shows Extras, An Idiot Abroad, Life’s Too Short, Drunk History, Modern Family, Short Poppies, The Crystal Maze, The Good Place, and more. In 2001 BBC Two aired The Office that was co-written and co-directed by himself and Ricky Gervais. In 2005 the American version of The Office premiered. In 2007 Merchant began hosting his own radio show named The Steve Show on BBC 6 Music. That same year he made his debut in film in the 2007 movie Hot Fuzz. He has since had roles in the films Run Fatboy Run, The Invention of Lying, Tooth Fairy, Hall Pass, I Give It a Year and others. In 2011 he went on a stand-up tour titled Hello Ladies that was released on DVD. Throughout his career he has been nominated for a number of awards and has won two Golden Globes, an Emmy Award, four British Comedy Awards and more.
