Steven Stamkos is a Canadian professional ice hockey player born in Markham, Ontario, Canada on February 7, 1990. He is currently a centre and captain for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League. In 2003 he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He was chosen first overall by the Markham Waxers in the 2006 OHL Entry Draft. While in minor hockey he won eight OMHA titles in a row. In 2008 he was selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was signed to a three-year entry-level contract and played in his first NHL game at the start of the 2008-2009 season in Prague, Czech Republic. In 2011 he became a free-agent and re-signed with Tampa Bay on a five-year contract for $37.5 million. In 2016 he was signed to an eight-year contract extension for $68 million. Stamkos has won two Maurice Richard Trophies for being the NHL’s leading goal-scorer. He has been named to six NHL All-Star Games and is a two-time NHL Second Team All-Star.
