STS9, known as Sound Tribe Sector 9, is an instrumental group that originated in Santa Cruz, California in 1998. The group consists of the following members: Hunter Brown, Alana Rocklin, Jeffree Lerner, David Phipps, and Zach Velmer, along with past member David Murphy. STS9’s sound consists of instrumental rock, electronic music, jazz, funk, drum and bass, psychedelia and hip-hop. The band is categorized as performing the genre of livetronica.
The group released its debut album in 1998 called Interplanetary Escape Vehicle on the label Landslide Records. In 1999 the group released a live album called Sector 9-The Brown Album on Landslide Records. In 2000 they released another album called Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace. In 2002 they released another live album called Seasons 01 on the label 1320 Records. 2003 brought STS9 another album released on 1320 Records entitled Live at Home. STS9 released 10 more albums and live show recordings up to 2016.
STS9 has performed in tours around the world. They have headlined festivals such as Summer Camp, Moogfest, Wakarusa, Outside Lands, Regeneration, Lollapalooza, and Electric Forest Festival. Their self-owned record label 1320 Records has over 300,000 downloads and has signed artists such as Bassnectar, ESKMO, and Glitch Mob.
