The electronic dance music duo known as Sultan + Ned Shepard represent the best that Canada has to offer when it comes to collaborations. Sultan, who is of Palestinian descent, was born Ossama al-Sarraf on November 13, 1979. He had moved between Cyprus, Egypt, and Kuwait, finally landing upon Montreal to attend college. He was given the opportunity to lead Montreal’s Mix 96 radio station each Sunday night from 12:00 – 3:00 AM, which was his entry into the world of mixing and DJ-ing. Shortly after making a huge name for himself across Canada, he opened his own studio to enhance production. Four of his songs were included on the “Global Underground 25: Toronto” album, which gained him the international fame he needed when that album went to number one on the Billboard Dance Album Charts in 2003.
Ned Shepard came into the picture when he saw Sultan perform in Montreal in 2002, and after giving Sultan a copy of his demo, the two began collaborating and producing together. In 2008, the duo created Harem Records, the label under which they are now releasing their music.
