Sylvia Earle is a celebrated oceanographer and lecturer, who was born on August 30th, 1935, in Gibbstown, New Jersey. She was appointed as an explorer-in-residence for National Geographic in 1998, and is regarded as an authority on the effects of oil spills. Additionally, she has been asked to serve as the leader of numerous research teams during different spills. Sylvia graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University, in 1955, and she went on to Duke University for her master's and doctorate in philosophy. She was named the first “Hero of the Planet'' by Time Magazine, in 1998. Earle equaled Graham Hawkes Deep River depth record, and was the captain of the first female aquanaut team during the Tektite Project, in 1970. Moreover, her daughter took over the Deep Ocean Exploration and Research founded by her.
