The Los Angeles group System of a Down was first created in 1993 by members Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadijan, and John Dolmayan. Their name was originally Soil, and the band at that time was comprised only of Tankian, Malakian, and Odadijan. However, they renamed themselves as System of a Down in 1995 and recruited Dolmayan to be their drummer. They were discovered after an amazing performance at the Viper Room in Hollywood, signed to America Recordings, and released their debut self-titled album in 1998. The album went gold, and had fans waiting in anticipation for their second album, Toxicity, released in 2001. Their sophomore album has since sold 6 million copies, soared to the #1 slot on the Billboard charts shortly after it debuted, and was named by SPIN Magazine as the “2001 Best Album of the Year”.
The band would go on to release three more albums, Steal This Album! in 2002, and then a two-part album release in 2005. Part one was entitled Mezmerize, while part two was entitled Hypnotize. All of their releases enjoyed major success and top positions on the album charts.
