Tego Calderon, born Tegui Calderon Rosario on February 1st, 1972 in Santurce, Puerto Rico is a Puerto Rican hip-hop artist. He moved from Puerto Rico to Miami at a young age and began to study percussion and eventually began playing drums in a rock band. His musical influences include the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, and Ismael Rivera. Tego’s musical style incorporates elements of slsa, dancehall, and hip-hop.
In 2000 Tego signed to fellow Puerto Rican rapper Eddie Dee’s label Boricua Guerrero. He then received his first radio hit with the single called “En Peligro De Extincion.” From 2001-2002 Tego worked on numbers collaboration albums. These included albums such as Kilates, Boricuas NY Vol.1 & 2, The Majestic, La Mision Vol. 2 & 3, and the Planet Reggae album. The later album included his first worldwide crossover hit called “Cosa Buena.” In 2002 Tego released his first studio album called El Abayarde. The album became the first hip-hop/reggaeton album by a solo artist to sell 75, 000 units in the first week with no major label distribution. He then signed a joint distribution deal with Sony Music Latin and formed his own label Jiggiri Records.
Tego released 3 more albums up to 2015 which included the titles of The Underdog, El Abayarde Contraataca, and El Que Sabe, Sabe. In 2011 Tego was featured as a supporting character in the movie Fast Five of The Fast and Furious Franchise.
