Cult-following alternative rock band The Afghan Whigs formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986 by Greg Dulli (vocals and rhythmic guitar) and John Curley (lead guitar), and also by Rick McCollum and Steve Earle, who would be later replaced by session and/or tour musicians from mid-1990s on. They debuted with a 1988 full-length self-released album and gained notoriety in the Seattle scene, and started touring the United States and some European venues. The fourth album “Gentlemen” (1993) saw a single of its tracklist aired on MTV and gained critical acclaim, but no significant commercial success. After their sixth studio album “1965”, the group disbanded, however, a compilation album in 2006 and a headline in London’s 2012 “ATP’s I’ll Be Your Mirror” festival would put them back on track for more American and European tours, an appearance on Coachella festival, two special edition reissue albums and two more studio albums up until 2017.
