The Black Sorrows Bio
The Black Sorrows is a blues-rock band formed in 1983 in Melbourne, Australia. It is led by Joe Camilleri (vocals, saxophone, guitar), and consists of John McAll (keyboards, backing vocals), Claude Carranza (guitar), Angus Burchall (drums), and Mark Gray (bass guitar). The quintet began as a semi-acoustic outfit in Melbourne, and soon released its first two albums: Sonola (1984) and Rockin' Zydeco (1985). Both of these albums were produced by Camilleri. Their next album “Dear Children” was issued independently, and was subsequently picked up by CBS. It peaked at number 18 on the Australian charts. Their song “Hartley + Rose” won the APRA Music Award for “Country Song of the Year” in 1991. In the 1990s the band changed its lineup and became a solo outlet for Camilleri and his changing roster of studio and live musicians. They also released a few more mildly successful live, studio and retrospective albums up until 1997.
